How to Use Essential Oils

There are three ways you can use your Young Living essential oils:

  • Aromatically
  • Topically
  • Internally

When you unpack your essential oils Premium Starter Kit, you may be a bit overwhelmed and wonder how you will ever learn how to use the oils.  Do not fear, most people wonder the same thing when they begin their oily journey; but you will soon be an expert. The person who enrolled you will be a great resource.  They want to help you get the most from your essential oils purchase.

Aromatic Use

Breathe Easier

This may be the most familiar way to use essential oils. Have you ever been to a spa and enchanted by the soothing and inviting aroma of Tea Tree and Eucalyptus oils wafting through the room?  You can now learn about the wonderful aromatic benefits of diffusing essential oils! Diffusers are all different, but each comes with specific instructions.  Most diffusers you will fill with water to the water line indicated, add 4-8 drops of oil, turn it on, and enjoy the delightful aroma.  You can set the light setting desired or turn the light off for sleeping and still enjoy the benefits of diffusing essential oils.

Tips & Tricks

Don’t be afraid to mix oils up.  There are many diffuser recipes you can find on Pinterest or the internet.  Try this bedtime diffuser combination that promotes rest and relaxation:

  • 2 drops Frankincense
  • 3 drops Cedarwood
  • 4 drops Lavender

There are ways to enjoy the aroma of essential oils without a diffuser.  Try putting a few drops of citrus fresh on a cotton ball, and place it in a trash can, gym shoes or bag, or just anywhere a scent upgrade is needed. One of the easiest ways is to put a drop or two into the palms of your hands, rub them together, and then cup your hands together around your nose and mouth and breathe in the aroma as long as you need to.

It is always best to start low and go slow – don’t hyperventilate, and see how your body reacts. You can also simply open up the bottle and inhale right from the bottle. You’ll be amazed how these simple solutions work!

Topical Use

Soothe Your Skin

Topical use is one of the more popular essential oil uses.  This will most likely be one of your favorite ways to use essential oils once you experience the amazing benefits of applying essential oils to the skin.  This usually turns skeptic people into believers!  Use your head!  Apply essential oils to your temples, behind the ears, to your neck, and crown of your head! If any area becomes sensitive or the oil is too strong, dilute with a carrier oil. Essential oils can be applied to most body parts, just use caution for the most sensitive skin and have a carrier oil handy when you first start using.

Tips & Tricks

As you become more experienced with applying oils topically you will learn that some applications may be more effective than others.

Massage is another great use for essential oils! Try adding Cedarwood and Lavender to a carrier oil to produce a calming and relaxing massage. If muscles need rejuvenated after working out, try Peppermint’s menthol essential oil added to a carrier oil and experience the cooling effect during a sports massage.

Another common application is applying essential oils to the soles of the feet.  Many times spa and beauty treatments include the use of Tea Tree essential oil before a pedicure to fight funky feet odors.  Just add 10-12 drops to the pedicure bath water.

The appearance of healthy skin can be improved by the use of essential oils!  Here are some tricks to add to your arsenal on how using essential oils can help your face glow and reduce blemishes.

  • Apply Tea Tree essential oils to a cotton swab and apply it directly on blemishes.
  • Bergamot essential oil can be added to nighttime routines for smoother looking skin.  Remember, citrus oils, like Bergamot can be photosensitive; after applying, you should avoid sun exposure.
  • Try adding Lavender essential oil to your bath for smoother looking skin for the entire body – and an aromatic treat!

Internal Use

Heal From Within

Ingesting Young Living essential oils can be very beneficial for health and wellness. Many of our products are infused with essential oils. Young Living has a Vitality line of oils that are labeled so you can distinguish our oils for internal consumption vs oils used for aromatic and topical use. Both are the same authentic and pure essential oil, but labeled differently to avoid confusion! You can add 1-2 drops of one of your favorite Vitality oils to your water each day to help you stay hydrated. Orange Vitality, Grapefruit Vitality, and Lemon Vitality are great tasting essential oils and calorie free! You can also try Thieves Vitality or Peppermint Vitality for a spicy kick to your day.

Tips & Tricks

Recipes can be enhanced by using essential oils to get unique and potent flavors into favorite foods. Only use a little! Some oils like oregano you only want enough on the end of a toothpick. Remember, start low and go slow!

Consider adding a twist of Lavender Vitality to your homemade icecream! Or try creating a authentic Italian flair in your pasta sauce by adding a drop of oregano and basil essential oil to give your meal a powerful flavor. For Thai food lovers, adding Lemongrass, Ginger Vitality, or Black Pepper essential oils for a taste you will love!
